Dermal Fillers

Restylane vs. Perlane — Is One Better than the Other?

Every day it seems another filler is brought to the market. For consumers, it can be hard to differentiate between the different names and what they were developed to address. But most fillers have specific targets that they are designed for.

At Lubuono Dermatology, we carry both Restylane and Perlane. Both are made by the same company, QMed, and both are hyaluronic acid fillers. You’ve probably heard of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body that gives the skin its volume, hydration, and fullness. As we age, the body’s production of hyaluronic acid slows down, so our skin becomes more loose and prone to wrinkles and folds. Volume in certain areas goes away, too.

Both Restylane and Perlane are injected to fill the space between collagen and elastin fibers within the skin because those two proteins provide support structure to the skin. Both also bind with water molecules to hydrate and fill the injection area.

But that’s where their similarities end. Here’s the difference between the two.

Perlane
Perlane is thicker in consistency than Restylane. In fact, it is three times thicker than Restylane. Because it is thicker, Perlane can’t be injected into areas of thin skin and areas that are lean. It needs fat around it to hide the filler. So, it works well adding volume to the cheeks, chin, and nasolabial folds. Moderate to severe folds love Perlane.

Restylane
Restylane is the more popular filler, having been injected over 11 million times! It is far thinner than Perlane. This allows Restylane to flow, so it is perfect for defining the lips or the hollows under the eyes. It works well on sensitive areas with finer wrinkles and thinner skin.

So, when you look at these two QMed fillers, it’s easy to see that they don’t compete, but they actually complement each other’s strengths.

Which lasts longer? Perlane, of course, because its thickness allows it to stay in the tissue longer. Restylane lasts about a year or more; Perlane six months longer than that.
