Say Farewell to Your Frown with Xeomin

We all expect to see a few lines and wrinkles on our skin at some point. That doesn’t mean that certain wrinkles don’t bother us. For many people, the most concerning creases are those that develop between the eyebrows. Glabellar lines, or frown lines, are the result of aging but they do a lot more than make us look older. Frown lines make us look angry. They can make us look unfriendly and may inhibit authentic social and professional interactions. It is possible to say farewell to frown lines. In our Spring Lake office, patients can choose to do so with Botox or with Xeomin. Here, we discuss why Xeomin is becoming a popular option.

What is Xeomin?

Frown lines aren’t merely the result of aging skin. We get these lines because of the frequent use of the muscles at the center of the lower forehead. When we squint or frown at all, the same muscles contract. As with any muscle in the body, the continual contraction of these muscles leads to toning. Just like toned abdominal muscles can etch the stomach, toned forehead muscles can create contours between the eyebrows. Xeomin can correct this.

Xeomin is an FDA-approved drug that is classified as a neurotoxin, neuromodulator, or wrinkle-reducer. The basis of this cosmetic treatment is the action that purified botulinum toxin type A has on muscles. As a muscle-relaxer, the botulinum toxin provides substantial efficacy in the treatment of muscular disorders. In much lower doses, this ingredient can relax the small muscles between the eyebrows to smooth permanent dynamic lines. It works by inhibiting the release of a neurotransmitter that is responsible for making muscles contract. When injected, the targeted muscle relaxes for three to six months.

How Xeomin Differs from Botox

Seeing Xeomin as just another Botox, many people may instinctively choose the more well-known product. There are differences between the two drugs that may affect the outcome of treatment. Making the best choice means making one that is well-informed. Though both drugs inhibit muscle contractions by inserting botulinum toxin type A into muscle tissue, Botox also introduces accessory proteins. These proteins may contribute to the risk of an allergic response after treatment. The response occurs as a result of antibody formation. With Xeomin, this risk may be decreased because there are no proteins included in the solution, only purified botulinum toxin.

Xeomin has been clinically proven to achieve comparable results to Botox and provides adults with the opportunity to see how much younger and friendlier they look without frown lines and other wrinkles. Why Skin Rejuvenation Takes Time

Many of the people who come to visit us are interested in either postponing or correcting common signs of aging. You know the ones we’re talking about, the crow’s feet that show how much you’ve laughed over the years, the frown lines that used to go away when you weren’t actually frowning. These and other age-related changes to facial appearance can be frustrating, to say the least. However common it is for people to seek treatment for these and other cosmetic concerns, there are still misconceptions about beauty and how to maintain it.

“Maintenance.” This is the area in which we can go wrong. We don’t think about maintaining our skin, which is interesting because we know we have to regularly care for our health and wellness in other ways. Many people eat well and exercise every day to maintain their shape and overall health. We brush our teeth every day and see the dentist every six months to make sure we avoid cavities and gum disease. When it comes to the skin, though, we all but forget that care is needed. Then, when the signs of aging become a problem, we then wonder what it will take to address them.

In wondering what it takes to address the signs of aging, we have to keep in mind that the skin needs to be maintained. We don’t mean cleansed and moisturized, either. To postpone or correct crow’s feet, loose skin, sagging eyebrows, and other problems, the objective is to keep the skin infused with collagen and elastin. For about the first thirty years of life, this task is well-met by hard-working fibroblast cells. After age thirty, these cells no longer pull their weight. The infusions of collagen and elastin all-but end. However, the skin still utilizes about 2% of the collagen and elastin it has. The ongoing annual degradation of that percentage eventually makes a big impact on the skin’s appearance.

Knowing that the skin’s firm, supple foundation degrades without collagen and elastin, we know what we have to do. Fortunately, there are several ways to promote the production of these key proteins. Depending on the age of the skin, one may undergo regular chemical peels to assist with cellular turnover. More significant concerns may need a series of laser treatments to bring fibroblasts back to life. After the cells get woken up, periodic collagen-inducing treatments can keep them that way.

What is Microdermabrasion and Why Should I Get It?

We know so much more about the skin today that we’ve got more ways to manage it than we know what to do with. When the skin starts to show the signs of aging, we might think about laser treatment, injectables, or even surgery. There may not be a need to go that far just yet. Have you heard of microdermabrasion? You’ll want to.

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a professional treatment intended for deep exfoliation of the skin. Exfoliation is a vital aspect of skincare because, without it, dead and damaged cells accumulate on the top layer of the skin. Stuck here, cells cause dullness and create a barrier to skincare products.

How Microdermabrasion Works

A microdermabrasion treatment takes an hour or less when performed on its own. To begin, we cleanse the skin and dry it. A small handpiece is then passed over the skin, where tiny diamond chips spray against the skin. Our DiamondTome microdermabrasion system works gently to remove the uppermost layer of debris from the epidermal tissue using vacuum pressure. After exfoliation is complete, the skin may be gently cleaned with a brush or warm towel. Some patients choose to combine their microdermabrasion with other treatments, such as a chemical peel, to achieve more noticeable results.

Benefits of Microdermabrasion

  • Microdermabrasion helps skincare products work better
  • The skin looks brighter
  • Sunspots and hyperpigmentation fade slightly
  • Fine lines look softer
  • Skin tone becomes more even
  • Skin is softer overall
  • The pores are emptied of dirt and oil

Side Effects

In addition to these benefits, patients also appreciate that there are very few side effects after microdermabrasion treatment. This enables them to get right back to normal activities. Though microdermabrasion can cause temporary redness, this side effect is usually gone within an hour or two. In most cases, redness is also very mild.

Microdermabrasion is a great treatment for adults of all ages who want to promote healthy cellular turnover. To schedule a consultation to discuss what you’d like to achieve for your skin, call our Spring Lake office at (732) 449-0167.
