Ultrashape or Velashape? Is this the Right Question?

It may feel to you as though you’ve waited an entire year for the return of warm weather. Now that we are planted firmly in Spring, your heart may be fluttering with all things new, especially friendlier temperatures and visions of summertime fun. In contrast to this, you may also be ever-so-slightly preoccupied with how you will look and feel your best when the time comes to don tank tops and shorts.

Here in our Spring Lake, NJ dermatology office, we love getting the opportunity to help patients just like you feel great in their own skin. To help you embrace the best version of you, we want to discuss the value of Ultrashape and Velashape treatments. The two sound similar, but are quite different – and that can make all the difference in which you choose.

A Look at UltraShape

UltraShape is all about fat reduction. This non-invasive body-contouring platform uses pulsed ultrasound technology to target excess fat cells in areas such as the thighs, hips, and stomach. Because it is non-invasive, working completely from the outside in, UltraShape does not require you to take time out of your busy schedule. This is precisely why this modality is popular. For several years, potential patients have shied away from the surgical liposuction procedure because they want to avoid the risks associated with surgery. UltraShape offers an alternative. During treatment, pulsed ultrasound passes through the skin to affect superficial, subcutaneous fat. On contact, this energy transfers to heat. This heat then disrupts the walls of each fat cell, causing held triglycerides to break free. Once separated from the cellular matrix, triglycerides can be metabolized. Results appear gradually as metabolism occurs, and fat cells will be gone forever.

A Look at VelaShape

While VelaShape is also considered a non-invasive body-contouring treatment, it’s objective is different than it’s Sister-platform. When we perform VelaShape, it is because a patient wants to reduce circumference and visible cellulite in one or more areas of the body. Rather than using ultrasound to target cells, VelaShape uses a combination of infrared light, radiofrequency, and gentle suction. The synergistic effect of these technologies promotes circulation and diminishes the appearance of cellulite. Common treatment areas include the thighs, flanks, abdomen, stomach, arms, or neck.

Now About That Question . . .

We posed the question “UltraShape or VelaShape?” In reality, there need not be an answer that involves one or the other. In many situations, patients achieve their objective with a combination of the two.

CoolSculpting® vs. UltraShape®: Exploring Your Treatment Options

Nonsurgical fat reducing procedures have become the new norm in body-sculpting. Now that men and women have a way to improve their physique without surgery, they are taking advantage of the innovative technologies available to them. Whether through surgery or not, treating unwanted fat means making an investment of your money and time. Therefore, it is only natural that you would want to know that the treatment you choose is one that will lead you to the body you want.

Two of the common nonsurgical treatments that are popular today are CoolSculpting® and UltraShape®. We offer the latter in our Spring Lake office. Here, we discuss the differences between the two methods of body-contouring so you can see how they work and what they have to offer you.

CoolSculpting treatment works on the theory of cryolipolysis or the destruction of fat cells through freezing. Treatment involves pulling a small area of tissue, such as the lower abdomen, up and in between two panels. Gentle, constant suction keeps tissue secured in this position while freezing temperature is delivered through each panel section. One of the clear disadvantages of this process is that cold temperature can be more than a little uncomfortable. Treating technicians claim that the discomfort that stems from cold lasts only 5 to 10 minutes, then nerve endings numb sufficiently to make the remaining treatment time tolerable.

UltraShape is also an external method of fat reduction; only this technique relies on the power of pulsed ultrasonic waves. This energy is tissue-selective, which means it only targets fat cells during each treatment session. As these cells are penetrated by varying ultrasound waves, they are broken down and separated from the superficial tissue to which they cling. This allows the body to naturally metabolize these cells over time. The manner of elimination does not differ from CoolSculpting to UltraShape; what is different is the method behind the fat destruction. Treatment consists of our technician passing a small handpiece over the treatment area to deliver the right amount of energy. Treatment takes less than an hour in most cases, and there is no downtime and virtually no discomfort during your session.

Let’s talk Body-Contouring: Velashape vs. CoolSculpting

body contouring coolsculpting spring lakeWith summer just on the horizon, many of our patients are starting to ask about the body-contouring treatments offered in our Spring Lake office. The methods used to slim down body parts such as the arms, thighs, buttocks, and abdomen have changed significantly in recent years. Men and women no longer have to feel the pressure to get liposuction if they don’t want to take that route. Instead, all they have to do is find the right non-surgical solution for their needs . . . and there may be a right one.

Non-surgical body contouring is typically performed with one of two methods: heat or cold. Here, we will make a comparison between the heat method available in our office, Velashape, and the fat-freezing method, CoolSculpting.

Freeze it to Melt it

Who would have ever thought that to melt fat, you should freeze it! The makers of CoolSculpting, that’s who. This procedure has been widely used for a few years now and continues to be a popular method of body-sculpting without surgery. Here’s how it works. The cooling panels are placed around a squeezable portion of fat, usually in the abdomen. The tissue is held between the panels with suction. It’s gentle enough, though mildly uncomfortable, according to patients.

The CoolSculpting process is completed in about an hour-long session (which needs to be repeated after a few weeks for optimal results). After the tissue is released, it is massaged. This is where patients express that they feel the most discomfort. Then, over the course of the next 12 weeks, the fat cells that have been frozen crystallize and are metabolized, released from the body. The manufacturer of this process claims that as much as half an inch can be reduced after the very first treatment.

Get Hot to Look Hot

One of the key differences with Velashape is that this device uses radio frequency to heat fat cells. While these cells are gently warmed, tissue is also simultaneously being massaged with gentle suction. This increases circulation and also encourages lymphatic drainage, through which toxins are released from the body. Another key difference between the two treatments is that heating tissue, versus cooling it, prompts the production of collagen. It is for this reason that Velashape may also improve the appearance of cellulite, a goal that has been notoriously difficult in the past.

Like CoolSculpting, Velashape does require multiple treatments to obtain optimal results. However, this treatment is not limited to the abdomen or the thighs. Velashape may treat those areas and also the hips, buttocks, love handles, and the upper arms.
