Let’s talk Body-Contouring: Velashape vs. CoolSculpting

body contouring coolsculpting spring lakeWith summer just on the horizon, many of our patients are starting to ask about the body-contouring treatments offered in our Spring Lake office. The methods used to slim down body parts such as the arms, thighs, buttocks, and abdomen have changed significantly in recent years. Men and women no longer have to feel the pressure to get liposuction if they don’t want to take that route. Instead, all they have to do is find the right non-surgical solution for their needs . . . and there may be a right one.

Non-surgical body contouring is typically performed with one of two methods: heat or cold. Here, we will make a comparison between the heat method available in our office, Velashape, and the fat-freezing method, CoolSculpting.

Freeze it to Melt it

Who would have ever thought that to melt fat, you should freeze it! The makers of CoolSculpting, that’s who. This procedure has been widely used for a few years now and continues to be a popular method of body-sculpting without surgery. Here’s how it works. The cooling panels are placed around a squeezable portion of fat, usually in the abdomen. The tissue is held between the panels with suction. It’s gentle enough, though mildly uncomfortable, according to patients.

The CoolSculpting process is completed in about an hour-long session (which needs to be repeated after a few weeks for optimal results). After the tissue is released, it is massaged. This is where patients express that they feel the most discomfort. Then, over the course of the next 12 weeks, the fat cells that have been frozen crystallize and are metabolized, released from the body. The manufacturer of this process claims that as much as half an inch can be reduced after the very first treatment.

Get Hot to Look Hot

One of the key differences with Velashape is that this device uses radio frequency to heat fat cells. While these cells are gently warmed, tissue is also simultaneously being massaged with gentle suction. This increases circulation and also encourages lymphatic drainage, through which toxins are released from the body. Another key difference between the two treatments is that heating tissue, versus cooling it, prompts the production of collagen. It is for this reason that Velashape may also improve the appearance of cellulite, a goal that has been notoriously difficult in the past.

Like CoolSculpting, Velashape does require multiple treatments to obtain optimal results. However, this treatment is not limited to the abdomen or the thighs. Velashape may treat those areas and also the hips, buttocks, love handles, and the upper arms.
