Xeomin: What is it and Why Would You Choose This Injectable Over Botox?

Botox has reigned supreme for well over a decade, and now we have even more choices in our wrinkle-fighting arsenal. The development of dermal fillers has only increased the popularity of Botox because the two types of products go hand-in-hand to address a wider range of concerns. But what about Xeomin? Why would we consider a Botox alternative when the original is so well-established? Here, we discuss what Xeomin is and why it may be the best choice for some patients.

What Is Xeomin, and What Does It Do?

Like Botox, Xeomin is a neuromodulator drug with botulinum toxin as the key ingredient. The drug is used to affect muscle tissue in a way that smooths overlying skin. It is typically administered into areas of the upper face, around the eyes and on the forehead, to diminish the appearance of dynamic lines and wrinkles (those that are related to facial expression).

How Xeomin Differs from Botox

It may not make sense to have numerous versions of the same exact product on the market. There are slight differences in formulation between Botox and Xeomin, which may make one product better than the other for some patients. By design, Botox contains the active toxin within a matrix of accessory proteins. Xeomin, on the other hand, has an extra step in the manufacturing process which purifies the botulinum protein a little more. There are no accessory proteins to encapsulate the active ingredient. An easy way to observe Xeomin vs. Botox is that the latter is contained within a shell whereas the former is the core ingredient only. There is no difference in the active protein and therefore the ultimate result is the same. The difference lies in the injection technique used to administer each drug.

When Xeomin is Better

Botox has been around for many years, which means millions of people have been repeatedly treated with the drug. Over time, some people begin to react differently to Botox. It isn’t that the active ingredient no longer works, it’s that the person has likely become immune to the proteins that encase the botulinum protein. In such instances, the logical choice is to use a product like Xeomin, which has no extra additives.
