We know so much more about the skin today that we’ve got more ways to manage it than we know what to do with. When the skin starts to show the signs of aging, we might think about laser treatment, injectables, or even surgery. There may not be a need to go that far just yet. Have you heard of microdermabrasion? You’ll want to.
What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a professional treatment intended for deep exfoliation of the skin. Exfoliation is a vital aspect of skincare because, without it, dead and damaged cells accumulate on the top layer of the skin. Stuck here, cells cause dullness and create a barrier to skincare products.
How Microdermabrasion Works
A microdermabrasion treatment takes an hour or less when performed on its own. To begin, we cleanse the skin and dry it. A small handpiece is then passed over the skin, where tiny diamond chips spray against the skin. Our DiamondTome microdermabrasion system works gently to remove the uppermost layer of debris from the epidermal tissue using vacuum pressure. After exfoliation is complete, the skin may be gently cleaned with a brush or warm towel. Some patients choose to combine their microdermabrasion with other treatments, such as a chemical peel, to achieve more noticeable results.
Benefits of Microdermabrasion
- Microdermabrasion helps skincare products work better
- The skin looks brighter
- Sunspots and hyperpigmentation fade slightly
- Fine lines look softer
- Skin tone becomes more even
- Skin is softer overall
- The pores are emptied of dirt and oil
Side Effects
In addition to these benefits, patients also appreciate that there are very few side effects after microdermabrasion treatment. This enables them to get right back to normal activities. Though microdermabrasion can cause temporary redness, this side effect is usually gone within an hour or two. In most cases, redness is also very mild.
Microdermabrasion is a great treatment for adults of all ages who want to promote healthy cellular turnover. To schedule a consultation to discuss what you’d like to achieve for your skin, call our Spring Lake office at (732) 449-0167.
